Adios…Sort of

Posted on: May 25th, 2010 by wmapother 19 Comments

I’m not ready today to give thoughts on the Lost finale or to say good-bye to the show, but I will offer something else instead.

The ‘Lost’ finale was broadcast in parts of Europe live at 5 and 6a.m. (!) Monday morning, simultaneous to its showing on the U.S. west coast.  In Madrid ‘Lost’ fans arranged to watch it in a movie theatre, and Lostzilla, a Spanish fansite, asked me to record a quick video to be played before the show.

What they didn’t ask for was an unholy butchering of their sacred mother tongue.  Sadly, however, that’s just what they got.  And this from someone who even on his best day — which, mind you, was over twenty years ago — had trouble with ‘frijoles.’

Because I think we can all use a lift on a day after the show has ended, the horror of my home-recorded Spanish is here.

And Away We Go..

So the finale just started a minute ago on the east coast.  Zap2it quotes some cast members here about their expectations for the final.  Here’s what I had to say (note that I have no — zero, none — recollection of saying this…unless it was after that wine at last week’s ‘Lost’ charity event at UCLA…):

“At this point, especially after [‘Across the Seas’], I have no idea. They’ve allowed themselves — they’ve kind of broken all the rules. They could leave Jack on the island, they could send Jack up in a rocket, they could burn Jack up, they could throw Jack in a hole. I have no idea.”

Report on Last Night’s HI-larity

Posted on: May 24th, 2010 by wmapother 1 Comment

Zap2it has a report here on last night’s “Dharma Station: UCB: A ‘Lost’ Comedy Event, the evening of ‘Lost’-themed sketches.  Damn, was it a blast.  No, I’m not just glad to be there:  That’s a papaya in my shirt.
It’s a safe bet I’ll be hanging out a bit at the UCB for the foreseeable future.  The comedians are hysterical and friendly.  Sigh.

Sun-Times Shout-Out

Posted on: May 23rd, 2010 by wmapother 1 Comment

The Chicago Sun-Times picked Ethan as one of Lost’s characters which made the show so memorable.  Normally, you won’t find such self-serving pieces here on the pages of ATW, but in this case, it pretty apparent that it’s in the interest of the general public’s welfare.  Also, it’s the show’s last day, so, you know, tough.  (Thanks, Nancy!)

Excerpt:

“10 underrated heroes made ‘Lost’ intriguing

In the end, my biggest complaint about “Lost” is probably this: It gave too much.

It gave us well-written, character-driven stories. It gave us groundbreaking narrative styles. It gave us Miles and Hurley, the best comedy team since Cheech and Chong. It gave us Egyptian mythology, Enlightenment philosophy, endless literary references, time travel, and a hydrogen bomb. It gave us flashbacks, flashforwards and flash-sideways.

It was too much….”

Finally, Ethan Gets a Laugh

Tonight I’ll be performing on stage at the UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade), the galactically-renowned comedy theatre (well, plus the one in NYC, too..).  They’re having a special show of Lost-themed skits and the tickets sold out faster than _____ (insert favorite Lost analogy here; the clock’s running on their usability).  The link to the show and the comedy regulars is here.

My skit was written by Jarrad Paul; requires a good bit of improv (somebody stop me!); and will feature moi and him; and be — oh, I think you know this already — HI-larious.  Also, I bought two papayas.  I have no idea how I’m going to use them in the skit.  But I will.  Oh, I will.
