PSAs Redux on Elder Abuse Awareness

Posted on: April 11th, 2010 by wmapother 2 Comments

Some of you may recall that I’m a spokesperson for the cause of Elder Abuse awareness.

This piece from the DOJ site helps explain why this issue needs to be addressed as quickly as possible:

In the United States, the issue of elder mistreatment is garnering the attention of the law enforcement, medical, and research communities as more people are living longer than ever before. This trend is expected to increase, as the U.S. Census Bureau projects that more than 62 million Americans will be age 65 or older in 2025, an increase of 78 percent from 2001, and more than 7.4 million will be age 85 or older, an increase of nearly 68 percent from 2001.[1] This aging population will require more care and protection than is currently available or possible.”

For help and information, please visit the Natl Center on Elder Abuse Awareness, at www.ncea.aoa.gov/.

Finally, I just learned from the NCEA that the PSA’s I shot for which played in a number of movie theatres last summer will also run this year, from late May to late June.  My original post on them is here

Mysteries of Scandanavia

Posted on: March 24th, 2010 by wmapother 3 Comments

Why are people from Scandanavia so kind?  Is the weather too cold to get annoyed?  Do the blonds put everyone in a good mood?  Is it just so much fun to say ‘fjord‘ all the time?  Whatever the reason, today I had an encounter with the kindly folk from way, way over there.

I was called in to play a character in a very cool upcoming MMRPG (massive multiplayer role playing game), or, as this type of game is known among those in a hurry, MMO (massively multiplayer online game).  The game is called “The Secret World” and is begin developed by Funcom.  In this post are a couple pieces of artwork from the game’s website here.

The director and writer were piped into my headset from Norway, which made the entire session feel like a game of its own, as if I were simply an avatar for a pair of thrill-seekers from the archipelago of Svalbard.  Based on the fun I had and their generous and insightful comments, there are many, many worse things to be.

Of course I can’t tell you anything about the game (as if!), but the link above offers some intriguing teasers.  What I can say is that the script and characters were very well written, and I hope they hurry up and release the dang game already.

Word (Up)!

Posted on: February 19th, 2010 by wmapother 1 Comment

So, for those of you who have been patiently, tirelessly waiting for me to do a show that children, or adults of delicate sensibilities, can safely watch, I’m thrilled to report that your sleepless nights are over.

In November 2008 I recorded an episode of ‘Wordgirl,’ thanks to the multi-hyphenated-great-guy Ryan Raddatz.  (My original blog post is here.)  This is the award-winning, funny and fantastic animated PBS show.  Each episode, the superhero Wordgirl teaches children two new vocabulary words, such as ‘economic’ or ‘meltdown.’  The ‘Wordgirl’ home page is here.  Think you can see it and not smile?  I doubt it.  : )

In my episode, “Mr. Big’s Mini-Golf,” I play Guy Rich, this handsome devil in boots.  What can I say?  The animators were very generous.

Well, apparently while I was hibernating last autumn, my episode of ‘Wordgirl’ snuck out past me and aired itself.  But never fear, it’s about to be rerun!  (Details below.)

It’s difficult to describe 1) how much fun it was to do (the producers and directors could not have been kinder), and 2) how amazing the other actors were.  I’d never been in a session like this, and I’m not exaggerating when I write that I was utterly in awe of their ability to control and manipulate their voices, even while improvising and in character.

One scene took place at a gathering of criminal masterminds, and the director asked them (the regulars on the show) to take turns improvising characters and lines.  They were off and running.  One would no sooner stop than another would begin, and from each of them, in only 10-15 words, a full — and hysterical — character emerged.  I nearly ruined the session by being laughing out loud, which I was able to avoid only because my jaw was hitting the floor.

Fortunately, we’d recorded most of my lines by that point.  I don’t think I could have followed that with anything but a squeak.

I’m not alone:  ‘Wordgirl’ just won the Kidscreen Award for Best Voice Talent.  Details here.  And toonzone.net just named it one of the Top 25 ‘Toons of the 2000’s.  Details here.

The first word of the day is humbling.

Broadcasts of the show vary somewhat among individual PBS stations, but it looks as if my episode, together with the ep “The Young and the Heartless,” will next air on March 3rd & 4th, then on April 26.  However, please check your local listings.  I suggest googling this — wordgirl “mini-golf” — along with the call letters of your local PBS station.  Also, as a reminder, over to the right at the top is the icon/link for the events calendar, which lists upcoming airings and events.

Finally, I just learned from a ‘Wordgirl’ producer that they’re waiting to hear if the show will be picked up for another year.  My suggestion:  Email Scholastic Media here to encourage them to keep Wordgirl aloft!

The second word of the day is Awesome.

Back from the Non-Dead, only to…

Posted on: February 1st, 2010 by wmapother 1 Comment

My, my, my. Five months just doesn’t take as long to slip by as it used to, does it? Well, no use blaming Mother Earth and Father Time for this one. Mea culpa, big time. My apologies for the absence — but those aliens just wouldn’t bring me back, no matter what I said. Okay, enough tomfoolery. Lost, er, Lots to catch up on.

So, after finishing the Shakespeare Lab in NYC, I narrated The New Sudan, a documentary on Southern Sudan’s work at rebuilding after the twenty-year civil war. It will soon begin the circuit of film festivals. The trailer is here.
Then I shot an indie film, Another Earth, in the gorgeous Catskills of New York state. It’s a romantic drama/sci-fi. That will also soon be making the festival rounds.
November found me in Vancouver, another beautiful location. (It’s a tough job, I know..). This time I was shooting an episode (called ‘Sanctuary’) of Fox’s new show Human Target, which airs THIS Wed, Feb 3, at 8pm. (Gold stars to those who guessed that might have something to do with my finally returning to my blog..) If you miss the airing, you can see it on Hulu by clicking here.
Then, in December, I was back in NYC to shoot an episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent. (which should air in March/April). NYC in December with the holidays lights and the smiling shoppers…Autumn been berry berry good to me.
That’s enough for the first post in five months. I didn’t stretch properly, and I don’t want an injury after so long away. More to come soon!

Elder Abuse PSA in Theatres

Posted on: May 25th, 2009 by wmapother 2 Comments
According to the best available estimates, approximately 700,000 to 3.5 million older Americans are abused, neglected, or exploited each year.

Unfortunately, that number may likely increase as the baby boomers age into elders, and more elderly are forced to move in with their adult children.

In November 2007 I shot some PSA’s (Public Service Announcements) for the KY Cabinet on Health & Family Services to help raise awareness of the issue in some small way.  (A link to all of them is here, and an earlier blog post is here.)  It was uncertain where and when the PSA’s would be shown.

But I’m happy to report the hard-working National Center on Elder Abuse has found a terrific use for them:  From May 22 to June 18 one of my PSA’s will precede movie trailers on over 700 movie screens in more than 50 theatres around the country.
This is a fast, effective means of educating lots of people at once and hopefully moving awareness of elder abuse to the mainstream, where it belongs.  Great work by the NCEA to reach people who can’t change the channel.  : )
More information on it is here (in re. their Join Us campaign), and in their May newsletter here.

One last thing:  Witness, the human rights advocacy org founded by Peter Gabriel, has posted the PSA here in their piece on Elder Justice.

Please educate yourself about this issue.  The NCEA has simple FAQs here, and you can subscribe to their newsletter here.

Finally, and most importantly, if you suspect any abuse of the elderly, please report it to law enforcement immediately.  Our elders deserve better.
