Techies

Posted on: November 20th, 2013 by wmapother 2 Comments

TechWeek, a digiterati conference held in several large (so far) U.S. cities, has named me to their first LA TechWeek100.  TechWeek100Per their site, “The Techweek100 identifies Los Angeles area leaders who have a significant impact on business and technology.”  I’ve been named both for being a co-founder of the film finance marketplace Slated, and also as an investor in various tech startups.  The list is humbling; I’m in very good company.

More from their site: “The Techweek100 includes managers of fast-growing technology companies, prominent investors, key enablers of the digital ecosystem, creators of new technologies, and other innovators that make important contributions to their field. The Techweek100 is not a ranking but rather a list of 100 technology leaders and organizations chosen by the Techweek community, Techweek Advisory Boards, and Team Techweek.”

The LA conference runs Nov. 21-22 and features a number of fascinating topics and speakers I’m looking forward to hearing.

Flyover Film Fest Flies Once More

Posted on: June 4th, 2013 by wmapother 2 Comments

Five years ago I started a June film festival with a few friends in Louisville, KY, my hometown.  cropped-flyover2013-header3Taking our cue from how the coasts view the Midwest, we called it the Flyover Film Festival.

It’s been a terrific success.  We’ve hosted a number of great films and filmmakers, and this year will be no different.  The 5th Annual Flyover Film Festival is scheduled for the Clifton Center in Louisville from June 12th-16th, and the schedule has just been posted.  I’ll be back in town for it, and I’m due to moderate the Q&A after the Sunday 1pm screening of City Strays.  We all hope to see you there.

Crowdfunding Panel

Posted on: March 7th, 2013 by wmapother 1 Comment

On March 20 at the WGA West in Los Angeles, I’ll be on a panel for new film financing models (eg, crowdfunding).  Others on the panel include actor-director Mark Duplass, and Brad Wyman of crowdfunding site IndieGogo.

Here’s the description from the WGA calendar page:  7-9 p.m.– WGAW 2nd Floor. RSVP by 3/18: MemberServices/Organizing or (323) 782-4567. Writers and filmmakers are taking advantage of “crowdfunding” and other emerging entertainment finance models; will you be next? Panel discussion includes writer/director/actor Mark Duplass (Kickstarter projects), William Mapother (Slated), and Brad Wyman (IndieGoGo). Moderator: Josh Welsh (Film Independent Co-President). Open to WGA members in active status (no guests) and Film Independent Fellows. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

And here’s a great NYT piece on crowdfunding clean energy (and just about anything else, too).

A Fitting Locale

Posted on: October 24th, 2011 by wmapother No Comments

When I was a student at Notre Dame — so long ago that there was not yet a need for “Return to Glory” — the campus sometimes felt, with a 3-1 ratio of guys to girls, as otherwordly…and not in a good way.

So, even if the ratio has evened out a lot, I suppose it’s appropriate that I’ll be back on campus on Nov. 4 for a screening and Q&A of Another Earth, given that our football fortunes now feel, well, you get the point.  Tickets for the journey are now available.

Q&A for AE in KY

Posted on: August 17th, 2011 by wmapother 1 Comment

This weekend Another Earth opens in Louisville, among other places, but I’m not from those other places, I’m from Louisville, so that’s where I’ll be this weekend.

It’s playing at the Baxter Ave. Filmworks, and this Friday & Saturday night I’m doing a Q&A after the 7:40 shows.  (Baxter has a strict no-rotten-vegetables policy.  Sorry.)

A little local press never hurt anyone:
• Louisville’s Voice-Tribune this week includes a very kind piece on me here, and
• Thursday at 3:30pm I’ll be calling into Terry Meiners‘s show.
