It’s Looking Grimm

Posted on: April 7th, 2016 by wmapother No Comments

Tomorrow night I’m guesting on NBC’s Grimm (9/8c)…as a minister, of all things.Grimm - I'm all tied up at the moment

The logline from NBC’s site: “A preacher who exploits his Wesen identity to gain followers arrives in Portland.” Hmm. Sounds like a pitch for an SNL sketch about the primaries.

Also, last week I was on the Grog ‘n’ Prog podcast (Episode 4) for a Lost-centric grilling. Eg, Why was Ethan spared during the Purge? Why wasn’t he in more episodes? And in ep 5.3’s final scene, why was that third palm frond from the left folded IN FOUR PLACES? etc., etc. You’ve been warned. Ep 4 here:

Priests, Priests

In the movie Jobs, I portray the calligrapher Robert Palladino,Robert Palladinowho helped cultivate Steve Jobs’ love of calligraphy and beauty in Apple’s products.  Palladino (in pic at right) was a monk while he was teaching at Reed College, then later became a parish priest after his wife died.  The Catholic Sentinel, the paper for the archdiocese of Portland, OR, has a nice article on Palladino and my thoughts on playing him.

As for my own skills in calligraphy, well, let’s just say that an expert would have trouble detecting differences between the handwriting of the present William and the one back in 4th grade…

‘Scuzzball verisimilitude’

Posted on: February 22nd, 2012 by wmapother No Comments

That’s the high praise from TV Guide’s piece on my Justified ep.  They tossed out that bone
right after noting that I’m a Kentucky native.  Hmmm.

Television Without Pity tossed me their bone of the ‘Lost Alumnus of the Week’ for the same ep.

I am awash in glory.

Sounds as if, y’all, that they had almost as much fun watching it as I did shooting it.  Almost.

Portraits in Dramatic Time

Posted on: September 16th, 2011 by wmapother 4 Comments

I thought I’d posted about this back in July, but now I can’t find it.  WordPress monster hungry.  Feed me.

So here’s another try.  Though the NYC showing is past, I hoping the series goes on tour, both in the US and internationally.  Next stop might be London..

•  PORTRAITS IN DRAMATIC TIME – a series of hyper-slow-motion, silent short films by David Michalek.

The shooting of each film lasted only about ten seconds, but because they’re shot at 1,000 frames/sec (regular speed is 24 frames/sec), they play back verrrryyyy slowly, at anywhere from five to ten minutes.  They were broadcast on a mammoth, 85-ft x 45-ft outdoor screen at part of NYC’s Lincoln Center Festival in July, and it’s expected that they’ll go on tour soon.  William is in three of them.  Other actors included Patti LuPone, Alan Rickman, Holly Hunter, Liev Shreiber, and performers from around the world.  The Wall St. Journal piece includes a Mapother quote or two, and a HuffPo piece includes the photo at right and a video interview with David.  Finally, as a sample, the Rickman film is here, and videos from Slow Dancing, David’s earlier installation, are here.
