‘Scuzzball verisimilitude’

Posted on: February 22nd, 2012 by wmapother No Comments

That’s the high praise from TV Guide’s piece on my Justified ep.  They tossed out that bone
right after noting that I’m a Kentucky native.  Hmmm.

Television Without Pity tossed me their bone of the ‘Lost Alumnus of the Week’ for the same ep.

I am awash in glory.

Ain’t It Cool News loooooves my upcoming episode of Justified. (Set in Harlan, KY, ‘natch.)
Sounds as if, y’all, that they had almost as much fun watching it as I did shooting it.  Almost.

Portraits in Dramatic Time

Posted on: September 16th, 2011 by wmapother 4 Comments

I thought I’d posted about this back in July, but now I can’t find it.  WordPress monster hungry.  Feed me.

So here’s another try.  Though the NYC showing is past, I hoping the series goes on tour, both in the US and internationally.  Next stop might be London..

•  PORTRAITS IN DRAMATIC TIME - a series of hyper-slow-motion, silent short films by David Michalek.

The shooting of each film lasted only about ten seconds, but because they’re shot at 1,000 frames/sec (regular speed is 24 frames/sec), they play back verrrryyyy slowly, at anywhere from five to ten minutes.  They were broadcast on a mammoth, 85-ft x 45-ft outdoor screen at part of NYC’s Lincoln Center Festival in July, and it’s expected that they’ll go on tour soon.  William is in three of them.  Other actors included Patti LuPone, Alan Rickman, Holly Hunter, Liev Shreiber, and performers from around the world.  The Wall St. Journal piece includes a Mapother quote or two, and a HuffPo piece includes the photo at right and a video interview with David.  Finally, as a sample, the Rickman film is here, and videos from Slow Dancing, David’s earlier installation, are here.

Someone has generously compiled a very nice homage video montage to my 2006 movie ‘Lather Effect‘ with lots of recognizable faces…  It’s here.

Biggest Show Pix

Posted on: December 10th, 2010 by wmapother 6 Comments
As I expected (here), last week’s Biggest Show for the Young Storytellers Foundation was a blast.  If you’re anywhere in the LA region (or ‘the southland,’ as no one but the local media call it), definitely participate or at least attend a show.  And whether you’re here or on the moon, it’s certainly worth donating to, which can be done here.

After some opening remarks and awards to volunteers who have performed in dozens of shows, the ten or so actors (just enough for a respectably drama-filled reality show) lined up.  It felt just like a cattle call.  Except the buyers were eleven-year-old playwrights.

Then one by one, each actor went to the front of the stage and pitched herself or himself to be cast in their plays.  Some actors danced, some did voices, and some, like me, just sat and said, basically, ‘Cast me, please, you eleven-year-olds.’  And they did.
